A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 20:1-9
"On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them; "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him." So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead." The Gospel of the Lord
+Let us Pray; Come Holy Spirit, enkindle the hearts of the faithful and fill them with the fire of your Love, send forth your Spirit Lord and they shall be created, and thou shall renew the face of the earth+
In this Gospel passage this early morning, there is an overwhelming sense of "movement" of "life"! Death did not win!
Let us enter this passage and be with the disciples. Walk with Mary, where is she going so early in the morning? Do you sense her heart just aching and missing Him, the one who has been her 'whole life' since the first day she met him. Mary of Magdala goes to the tomb, walk with her, it is still dark, the morning sun just rising. Be there with her when she arrives at the tomb she pauses in disbelief and maybe horror, maybe she is so tired, she feels she is seeing things? Where have they taken him, this is her pain now. What does she do with her pain and who does she turn to? The most reasonable thing for her to do-she goes to "who is in charge" of the Christian Household and she tells Peter what she saw. (We see the line of authority established) She shares all the facts and you can hear the pain, confusion, fear, ache, horror, and maybe questioning too, racing through her heart in her voice. Watch the disciples drop what they are doing and run out the door, follow them, try to keep up pace with them..hear the thunder of their feet beating on the ground as they race towards the tomb, try to keep up with them, run, run hard! Can you hear them speaking quick sentences to each other, breathlessly little "blurts of words" what do you hear as you run with them? John in the lead and Peter running as fast as he can behind him, his heart pounding with a mixture of fear, hope, sorrow, joy what is there in his heart? He the "established" lead, now he faces another painful decision of 'what to do' if it is true, that the body of our Lord Jesus, is truly no longer in the tomb.
As we are on our final day of a Young Adult Triduum Expedition here at St. Josephs Formation Center (with over 25+ young adults on retreat), it has been a truly grace-filled time! What a gift these Young Adults are to the Church! As we ran to the chapel last night, it drew to mind how the disciples( Peter and John) ran with haste! Those "fast feet"! "Fast feet" are interesting, either fear is propelling or Love is compelling them forward! As we watch John and Peter, we see that John made it there first? Was it due to the "robustness" of youth? or could it be that John reached there first, because "He believed?" The passage from mind to heart went quicker inside him? Could that be a possibility too? It says in the Gospel; "He saw and believed" but I wonder, was his heart already disposed to this assent of Faith, because He was walking this journey closely with Mary at the cross. He had seen what the others didn't see. The horrors of the crucifixion. Could it be, that it bore fruit, the suffering bore fruit, that fruit of Faith and the fruit of Faith? LOVE. The suffering taught him to Love, and Love was burning in his heart for the Lord and for the Blessed Mother of our Lord. He believed and therefore, He could Love greater and therefore, He had fire, joy, agility, he had the ability to MOVE forward! Faith gets us to the place the Lord is calling us, very quickly. Faith moves our hearts with great speed-, that YES! of Faith, that YES of Obedience moves the heart into "high gear" and yes, we "arrive there "first" because Faith carries us rapidly into the Love in the Heart of Christ. What in your life, right now, this moment this Easter Sunday is our Lord asking you , to Believe in- to Have Faith in Him? What is so painful for you- for me to Trust the Lord with in my life? To entrust to Him? Do I allow the Lord Jesus to Love me, as I am, believing with Faith, that I am indeed precious to Him, He died for me! and would have suffered it all, just for me? Do I believe that? Do I realize "make it real" that His Precious Blood was shed for me?
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, I believe help my unbelief, I hope, help my doubt, I love you, increase my love for you! Amen
final note: Who do you think made it to the chapel "tomb" first last night, the young adults or Mother? :>)
