A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 13:1-5
"Before the Feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end. The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper, fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God, he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples's feet and dry them with the towel around his waist. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me." Simon Peter said to him, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well." Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed has not need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all." for he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, "Not all of you are clean."
So when he had washed their feet and put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you?" You call me 'teacher' and 'master', and right so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. The Gospel of the Lord
+Let us Pray: come Holy Spirit, enkindle my heart with a fire of love+
In the Gospel today, we are watching Love in action. We are learning what Love looks like with our brothers and sisters in Christ. It is a descent, a coming down, it is humble, merciful, a servant witness and tender. A few points we will look at here: 1st) "Jesus knew his hour had come." This knowledge of a "fullness of time" brings us back to Galatians 4, "In the fullness of time, God sent his Son." Here we see, his "hour"- that fullness again of time had come for him full circle and now it is a return to the Father, from where he came. Question, "Do I realize and understand, that I too, as a child of God, have a mission on this earth and there is a measure of time given to me also? Do I realize, that I too, have come from my Father and, when it's time, I will return to my Father in heaven? Do I realize that our Father in heaven is all love, mercy and is totally involved with me, his child, right now, at this very moment in time in my life?
Second point to possibly ponder, the powerful and enigmatic words, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later." I think these words are so true, as there are so many things that we do not understand at the moment. Therefore it's easy for us to discount them and say, this is "not from God," but we don't have all the pieces, and there is a greater picture that we have yet to understand. Do I believe in God's goodness, love and power? Do I believe that my Father in heaven 'has this'? (Whatever the "this" is). Patience is necessary, and this we must pray for as disciples. I remember a wise priest once telling me, "Patience is nothing else but the willingness to suffer." Question: What must I be patient with right now? What "mystery" in my life do I find myself demanding an answer, a solution, a conclusion to, because I don't want to 'suffer it' any longer, I don't want to be patient, I don't want to trust, I just want it fixed now? Where is the Lord asking my Trust and Patience?
A third point is to reflect upon the beautiful words: 'Do you realize what I have done for you?" I love these words. They always bring me to a place of depth and stillness and love. Just stay with Jesus here. As we have spoken of in all the previous lectios, there are different ways to pray. If you are able to stay with Jesus and allow Him to wash your feet, and gaze into your eyes and say these words to you and allow yourself not to be rushed along by the disciples next to you, waiting their turn, just look into His eyes. He is saying' "Do you___(your name)_____realize what I have done for you?" Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you, to look at whatever He shows you in your life- now BE with Jesus.
+Prayer: Lord purify me through life's sufferings and through it all, teach me to Love, I love you Jesus.
