A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 13:31-35
"When Judas had left them, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and God will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." The Gospel of the Lord
+Let us Pray: Breathe in me O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy, draw my heart O Holy Spirit. Amen
In the Gospel of John, only sentences before this Gospel passage, Jesus fortells his betrayal, by whom? They are not strangers, but those whom he loved and lived with. This is important, because it sets Loving in the context of Suffering. What is going on in this passage here? Judas has just left our Lord to go out and betray Him. Jesus knows this. There must have been a growing momentum of antagonism, sensed by the disciples, towards Jesus and towards them. This is something we too, as Catholic Christians, can relate to, in our present culture in which we live. Our Lord calls the disciples and us, "my children," why do you suppose this? Our Lord speaks about glory and glorifying the Father as he identifies himself as 'Son'. He gives us a new commandment: 'to Love.' How is this all connected?
Let us ask Jesus. The Lord is showing us the connection. Jesus obeyed the Father, surrendered to the will of the Father, willingly, lovingly, sacrificially. Doing so he glorified the Father and it made him fully Son, fully who He is, the Father's. There can be no constraint with Love, as Love must be free. It was Love that moved Him to obey the Father, it was Love that moved Him to surrender to the Father's Will, it was Love that moved Him with the Father into the fullness of His mission, it was Love that achieved all of this. Love then is all, it is the way. In my life today, where am I retracting my heart-from whom? Who do I not want to love? Who do I think doesn't deserve my love? Who do I find easy to love and why? And who do I find difficult to love and why? We cannot love like Christ without Christ. Where/When did I pull my hand out of His hand? Where/When did I say, no! it hurts too much! It costs too much Jesus! not ________, anyone else, but not them. Sit close to Jesus, place your tiny hand in His. After all, we are all children of our Heavenly Father, we are all small ones in His eyes. . Can you manage to place your hand in His, reach; freely, trustingly, lovingly! Can you rest on His greatness to help you in your weakness with those you find difficult to love? Can you allow Him, to love through you? How brave are you? How magnanimous of heart?
Prayer: O Mary Gentle One, teach me to Love, like your Son. Amen
