A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 14:23-29
"Jesus said to his disciples: "Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, 'I am going away and I will come back to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe." The Gospel of the Lord
+ Let us Pray: Breathe in me O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy, act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work too may be holy, draw my heart O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy, strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend all that is holy, guard me then O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy Amen
Let us take time to read this passage out-loud several times slowly. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you. If your heart is agitated, make it part of your prayer-allow the Holy Spirit to get rid of the 'static' so that God's peace can reign. Let us listen to Jesus now: "Whoever loves me, will keep my word", what does it mean "to keep?" What does it mean when Jesus says: "we will come?" Who is the 'we' ? In this Gospel passage our Lord is telling us what love 'looks like' to him. What do you see in this passage, how does Jesus 'recognize' love what does it 'look like' to Him ? Listen and allow the Lord, to look right into your eyes, and listen to Him as He says to you: "Whoever loves me will keep my word". What is he saying to you? What "word" or what part of His words do you find so difficult 'to keep?' to ...'heed' ? How humble is our Father in heaven to come down to us, His adopted children to make a home with us if we but, 'keep His word.' There is something very intimate here, that he is sharing with us; the relationship between the Father and the Son, this relationship is what Jesus wants us to have too with Him and with the Father. The invitation and the promise are tied together in this passage, and what is the promise? Do I believe it? He wants us to be in relationship with the Father, as adopted sons/daughters of the Father, He wants us to live in-abide in with Him, this place of comfort, security, 'establishment', peace, assurance, hope, consolation, company, Love! Lets go back to the first part; "Whoever loves me will keep my word": What does 'keep' mean then to you and to me? For me it draws several thoughts one of which is a memory. I have a picture of my Dad, who died in 2007. I keep it in the back of my Bible. Why? I keep it because I want to keep his memory 'alive' in my heart and what he taught me. One final thought possibly to lift you in prayer- the Gospel says: "The Holy Spirit.....will teach you everything." Wow! Is that a powerful word to read for us, as disciples. It gives us absolute confidence that we have all we need to travel this journey, the Holy Spirit will teach us EVERYTHING" ! Everything means everything! What confidence can we walk with! He will teach me/you everything, if we keep His Word!
+Prayer: Lord Jesus Son of the Father, open my heart, that I may hear your voice, help me to see the true treasures on this earth, that I may value what you value, help me to treasure the true riches of your love and grace. Grant me the grace to cooperate with every prompting of your Holy Spiirit. Amen
