A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 16:12-15
"Jesus said to his disciples: "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you in all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorifty me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine, for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you." The Gospel of the Lord
In this beautiful passage today, let us prepare our hearts to encounter the WORD-the Person. "He will guide you to all truth." Wow! I love that! To have a guide implies there is a particular way that would be best to travel, a way that is 'known' to be true, and a way that allows us to see Beauty along the way! It also says, the way needs a guide, it has spots of possible danger, or places you could take the wrong turn, it implies a path, following and a final destination. As we read this passage slowly, we are being drawn into relationship with the Blessed Trinity. Let us stay for the sake of this Lectio with the words, "He will guide you to all truth." Have you ever said something to someone hoping to help them, and yet you realize, you were led to Truth? As you talk with the other, you are being guided to truth and you become aware that the conversation was not necessarily all for the other's sake. God had the intention to bring you to the place he wanted you to reach!
I can recall such a moment. My Dad (retired police officer) took a bullet in his leg in a shooting, trying to protect his captain, who was ultimately shot and killed. The bullet my Dad took hit him in the thigh, and lodged itself in his sciatic nerve and remained there the rest of his life, causing excruciating pain which pain killers couldn't alleviate. We had an agreement that he could call me day or night 24-7. Sometimes he just needed to get his mind off the pain. I recall a early morning phonecall. The phone rang at 1:30 am on a work night for me. I jumped out of bed and it was Dad. He said, "Honey it's ok I'm calling right? You said I could right?" I said, "Yes Dad, what is it, is the pain bad tonight?" He didn't answer, which was my answer. He said, "What's it all about dear?" "Why are we here?" He sounded tearful- my heart ached. He had been pondering the deeper things, as pain and suffering often draw us to, (close to the cross, close to Jesus) seeking answers. Here in this place of encounter it happened. I was wide awake all of a sudden, alert and I answered my Dad: "Dad, we're on a journey, none of us has the same journey. We are here only for a brief time. Its all about Love Dad, to learn how to love by being loved by God. To live in that love and to bring as many as we can with us back home to heaven. My Dad said, "thanks Baby". He was tearful thanked me again and said goodnight. I have never forgotten that. Because when I hung up the phone I sat on the edge of my bed with that surreal sense of encounter, and awe, I met Jesus, the Spirit led me to truth. The Spirit led me to the Person who is Truth. I was somehow brought into the truth of my greater mission simply by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I have never forgotten that, nor the peace of those encounters with the Holy Spirit.
To be guided means, there is a guide, a way to go and a destination. That destination is Truth. Truth is the Blessed Trinity. This is a fullness of relationship of Persons. To be guided into the fullness of this Love, this relationship, means I obey the guide, it means, I trust the guide, it means, I follow. Do you follow? Do you give credence to the wisdom of the guide? Do you Trust Him, as He takes you on YOUR way with Him? What is making you afraid of the guide? What do you want to know? Where in my life today, is the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking, prodding, prompting, moving me? It could be to forgive someone, to reach a clarity in something, to reach a place of peace in something, to find the reason to change something (a truth revealed) ?
Prayer: O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, speak to me, help me to be docile, to allow myself to be led so as to be guided to all truth, into the greatest truth of my adoped sonship/daughtership in God. Amen
