A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 10: 1-12, 17-20
"At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laboreres are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for the harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way, into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, "The kingdom of God is at hand for you." Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say, "The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that, we shake off against you." yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand. I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town."
The seventy-two returned rejoicing, and said, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name." Jesus said, "I have observed Satan falling like lightening from the sky. Behold, I have given you the power to 'tread upon serpents' and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven." The Gospel of the Lord
+Prayer: Come Holy Spirit, enkindle the hearts of the faithful and fill them with the fire of your Love. Amen
In this Gospel today, there are many instructions for us, as disciples of Jesus, but for this particular Lectio Divina, we are going to look at two particular sentences: "greet no one along the way" and "rejoice because your names are written in heaven." Let us ponder them. Why does Jesus say: "Greet no one along the way." Could it be that there is an 'understanding' implied here, of staying focused when you are on a mission. When we listen to the voices of others, it is easy to forget the First voice, 'THE' voice, that instructs our heart in a particular 'way.' Distractions can be a welcome pastime because they can take our minds off of the difficulties we encounter on the way, but the danger for the disciple is to forget why we were journeying in a particular direction to begin with, and so remain 'in the distraction' and loose our focus. Focus is one of the hardest things to maintain for any good athlete, but those who have learned how to stay focused are those who grow in skill and agility in the sport. And then the final sentence which our Lord speaks in this Gospel passage: "rejoice because your names our written in heaven." What's the correlation between the first instruction and the last instruction of our Lord? Why does Jesus leave them with these words? Could it be, our Lord is teaching us how to keep the focus until the end? To keep one's eyes on the goal, and to continue on, requires focus on the goal, the final end. It is critical to do this, when resistance, rejection, discouragement, fatigue have a grip on our heart when like the athlete, we have met with injuries, and defeats.. As we look at this Gospel, the disciples are being taught how to battle these things. Let us pray and spend time with Jesus and listen to him. What is he asking you to do right? What do I want to do with that? We must intentionally follow, love requires freedom and freedom requires 'releasing the heart' from grasping. Look at your life, listen to what Jesus is saying to you, in this passage. In what direction is the Lord leading you presently? What is he calling you to do, say, endure, receive? What's your answer? and finally, what's the goal? Why are you going through this for him? Where is your joy "anchored?" Are you rejoicing over the right things? Do you believe that he can bring you to the goal? If not, share with him why and bare your heart to him, in all honesty. Give him the chance to speak to your heart. He just wants the chance ~
Prayer: Passion of Christ, strengthen me, O good Jesus hear me, within thy wounds hide me, suffer me not to be separted from thee, from the malicious enemy defend me. Amen
