A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 4:1-11
"At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread." He said in reply, "it is written: One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God." Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you and with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone"
Jesus answered him, "Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test." Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me." At this, Jesus said to him, "Get away, Satan! It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve." Then the devil left him and behold, angels came and ministered to him. The Gospel of the Lord
"If you are the Son of God....If you are the Son of God...If you will ...worship me." The "If's" of the evil one-who tries to 'unsettle us' and destroy our peace and destroy our awareness and enjoyment of the Company of Jesus. In the Gospel, the Identity of our Lord is attacked and challenged -when? When he is physically weakened from fasting. What does our Lord do, to combat the lies, the 'inquiries' the temptations of the evil one? We too, have temptations upon us daily and those temptations will hit us the hardest when we are 'weakened' from fasting, people, struggles, sufferings, lack of sleep, ...the list goes on. The greatest temptation? To swallow the Lie that I am displeasing to God, unloved by God...that he doesn't love me, or has forgotten me, does not hear me, is not close to me, does not want a close relationship with me etc. This targetsthe Truth of our very existence, that we are His beloved sons/daughtersprecious to Him. This is the most foundational Truth and if he can unsettle that, many other areas crumble. Satan's lies are recognizable by the lack of peace you feel all of a sudden and that lack of peace lingers affecting you throughout the day, making you sad, or irritable with everyone or defensive. When Jesus shows Truths to us about ourselves, we are always left with peace and freedom, not condemnation, or fear, or unsettling. Now, ponder this; where have I lost peace? What triggered it? Was it an incident? a person? a bill? a conversation? etc. Now go to Jesus with that, let Him look with you, at what is making you afraid. Tell Him exactly what you feel inside, what feels like a "truth" to you. Its the only way to expose the lie. Mother Teresa told us, as young sisters, that the 'fingerprints' of Satan are; Discouragement, Despondency, Despair, Disheartened. Go to Jesus. With all the powers of your soul, ask Him for the grace to open your heart, to His Love. Ask Jesus to reveal the lie, that your heart has swallowed and ask Jesus to expel the lie and its author, and to cast him down off the parapet as he did here in this Gospel and ask Jesus to send his angels to minister to you, to tend your heart and make it strong again in His Love.
