Romans 8: 26-27
Brothers and sisters:
The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness;
for we do not know how to pray as we ought,
but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.
And the one who searches hearts
knows what is the intention of the Spirit,
because he intercedes for the holy ones
according to God's will.
Come Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, speak to my heart. Amen
Today we are going to enter into the 2nd Reading for Lectio Divina
As I was watching a young mother the other day in church, with her tiny newborn crying in her arms, the mother picked up the baby and rocked the baby to and fro, and then she looked at the little one and said audibly; "whats wrong" She kept rocking the infant, singing softly in his ear, then the Father reached down and lifted the child from the mother's arms and he held him in his arms with firmness and tenderness and then proceeded to walk out of the pew and go to the back of the church. Before long, the cries were no longer audible and soon the Father with his sleeping son returned to the pew, with the baby fast asleep in his Papa's arms! Hold this image for a bit. This is you and me in the arms of our Heavenly Father, our 'Papa.' You are his precious child. We cannot always express in words what is stirring within us, or perhaps the movements deep in the heart, that burn within us, how does one put that into words? We don't know how, we only know, its there. Perhaps we feel restless, or hurt or uneasy or agitated and if someone were to say to us "whats wrong?" We too would be like the tiny infant, unable to utter a word, we would be speechless. The greatest and deepest feelings often cannot be put into words. How often have you looked at a sunrise and fell speechless? Or had the beauty of rustling leaves capture your hearing and you stop what you are doing to drink it in. Perhaps the pain passing through your heart at the loss of your father or mother is so deep you cannot speak a word that expresses the fullness inside you, and so you remain in silence. We do not know how to communicate the depths of our soul, but the Spirit of the Lord does. "The Spirit himself intercedes for us, with 'inexpressible groanings" I love that! Let Love communicate and interpret me before the Father, for that is what He does. The infant in the Father's arms could not express himself, but he was contented falling asleep in the Father's arms for the Father knew that he needed to be held firmly in place in order to fall asleep, the baby was too tired to know that. Allow yourself to be in the Father's arms, allow the Holy Spirit to intercede, allow Him (in silence) to search your heart and express your heart to the Heavenly Father and rest in this, rest in His presence, this is prayer.
Closing Prayer: Come Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, open to me the mysteries of the Kingdom of God
