A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 14:1, 7-14
"On a Sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with embarrassement to take the lowest place. Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place, so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to the higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. For everyone who exhalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." Then he said to the host who invited him, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." The Gospel of the Lord

This mosaic is titled, 'Holy Wisdom.' Many of the earlier works of Sacred Art have this common 'stance' of our Lord. Notice HIs hand in this mosaic as you ponder the words: "Go and take the lowest place." The words; 'go and take' imply an action. Our Lord is instructing us, what action 'to take' and to be 'assertive about it', as 'to take' something, is to grasp it and hold it. Sit with our Lord in this passage and allow His gaze to rest upon you as you listen to his word. What is Jesus saying to you here? Who but our Lord Himself has truly taken "the lowest place," He who is God, has stooped down to us, in our humanity and become one of us, in all things except sin. He emptied Himself. That 'self-emptying' was going to the lowest place. What disturbs me and slows me down, from following Him there, from wanting to to there myself? What do I fear will happen if I go there? What will God not do for me? The place of humility is the place of the "little ones'. Quite oftentimes it is so painful to our ego, the little "cuts" we receive from one another, or "the cold and arrogant shoulder" of another who pushes you away and puts you in place. Sometimes our preconceived idea of the "lowest place" makes us shudder at the thought of voluntarily seeking it out. We feel perhaps lonliness awaits us there, as if the Lord will forget us in that place. One of the many lies of the evil one, is just that and our Lord is saying the opposite. Here is where He seeks us out and lifts us close to Himself. Talk with Jesus, share with Jesus, let Him into your heart.
Prayer: " From the fear of being forgotten, deliver me O Jesus., from the desire of being preferred, deliver me O Jesus, that others may be loved more than I , Jesus grant me the grace to desire it" Amen
