Gospel Matthew 25:31-46
Jesus said to his disciples:
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory,
and all the angels with him,
he will sit upon his glorious throne,
and all the nations will be assembled before him.
And he will separate them one from another,
as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the king will say to those on his right,
'Come, you who are blessed by my Father.
Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me,
ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.'
Then the righteous will answer him and say,
'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,
or naked and clothe you?
When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'
And the king will say to them in reply,
'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did
for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.'
Then he will say to those on his left,
'Depart from me, you accursed,
into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry and you gave me no food,
I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
a stranger and you gave me no welcome,
naked and you gave me no clothing,
ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'
Then they will answer and say,
'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty
or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison,
and not minister to your needs?'
He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you,
what you did not do for one of these least ones,
you did not do for me.'
And these will go off to eternal punishment,
but the righteous to eternal life."
+Prayer Come Holy Spirit, Come Holy Spirit, Come Holy Spirit.
I will always remember this beautiful simple lesson Mother Teresa gave us as young sisters. She would tell us, that the Gospel message could be reduced to 5 fingers; She would point to each of her fingers on her right hand saying the words; You...did....it....to....me in her deep Albanian voice. If you and I truly believe this, then the manner we approach everything, will change. There will be an interior 'shift.' How I conduct myself, respond, listen to another, all of this will be affected. If you and I really believed that what we do to the least (which is everyone) we did it to Him, then we would find ourselves living in a higher pitch of joy on a daily basis.
I am sure I met Jesus yesterday in the soul of a poor man who had lived on the street for a long time. He came to the Place2b (our local homeless shelter run by the Handmaids- African Sisters) yesterday for Thanksgiving dinner. His name is Anthony. Nothing extraordinary took place in our conversation but it was something in his eyes and something in what he spoke that magnified the Lord's presence. He came up to me and said, "Sister, do you remember me? I sat next to you last year at dinner." I couldn't recall and said to him, forgive me, I forgot, what is your name? " He said, Anthony." I said to him how are you doing Anthony? As he looked into my eyes, I noticed a presence and a 'peace.' He said, "I found a place to stay last winter , January was hard but I found a place off the street. My heart ached. I remembered him now, yes, he looked different, he looked older. Then he said to me, unprompted, "I'm praying for you." It moved me profoundly, and I thanked him and he said; "Oh sure, prayer don't cost a penny." What was that whole conversation about, I asked myself later in the day? Hard to express in words, when we encounter Jesus, but He was there, He was present in that meeting, in that conversation. I came away richer because I came away silently pondering God.
Prayer: Jesus silent in the soul of the person in front of me, I love you, I love you Jesus.
