Gospel Matthew 13:44-52
Jesus said to his disciples:
"The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
which a person finds and hides again,
and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
searching for fine pearls.
When he finds a pearl of great price,
he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,
which collects fish of every kind.
When it is full they haul it ashore
and sit down to put what is good into buckets.
What is bad they throw away.
Thus it will be at the end of the age.
The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
and throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
"Do you understand all these things?"
They answered, "Yes."
And he replied,
"Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven
is like the head of a household
who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old."
+ Come Holy Spirit Beloved of my soul, open my heart to the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. Amen
When we pray this beautiful prayer of Lectio Divina, begin first by finding a place where you can sit very quietly, alone with Jesus. Pray to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to enter your heart, welcome Him and allow Him to lead you in the silence of your heart. Slowly and attentively read the Gospel, listen to the Words you are reading. be eager to hear what it is He wants to say to you, " The Gospels place the reader in front of Christ, his life and his mind. They help us to contemplate and to meditate on the life of Jesus. In this silence that confronts us with His Word, God is close to us. He does not leave us. We perceive him, and he perceives us. This face-to-face inundates us with his light and imbues us with his presence." (The Power of Silence by Robert Cardinal Sarah)
The kingdom of heaven seems to be found, at times, when one is not necessarily 'looking for it.' (the treasure in the field) The kingdom of heaven also seems to found by one who is searching and looking intentionally, however he is taken up by the unexpected magnitude of the treasure discovered. (the Pearl of great price) The kingdom of heaven also seems, to "find us" as the net cast into the sea collects many fish. Ponder these three parts of the parable. Where do you find yourself? If the net were cast right now, this moment and you were "brought in" brought home before God, what shape would the Lord find you in?
Let us look carefully at the parable again. When the Kingdom of heaven (the treasure in the field, the pearl of great price) is found the 'finder' is filled with; Joy, Intense focus, risk, and a radical response that happens suddenly. The selling of the 'all' to purchase the 'ALL! The former desires are taken over by One Singular Desire, the 'finder is focused and from this intense focus flows action!' Anyone who has fallen in love knows what this 'ALL' feels like. There is nothing the heart desires more than the treasure perceived. Each state of life, experiences this, when we find God's will in our life. if we respond to the Will of God with our unreserved love, it produces, Joy, Peace, Freedom, intense focus and direction as if everything culminates within a person. There is something so tender in watching a couple on their wedding day, during the Mass, when they exchange rings and pledge lifetime fidelity, there is Joy! There is something so profoundly moving and life-giving to the soul, elevating it to the highest things; when one watches a priest on his Ordination day, during the Mass, as he lies prostrate on the floor in the form of cross, and gives himself irrevocably to God to be poured out, for the salvation and sanctification of souls....for us! There is Joy!
There is something so deeply beautiful in watching a young sister come before Her Lord and Spouse and freely give herself to Him, in the profession of vows in a life of the evangelical counsels in order to be fruitful in a manner the world does not comprehend. There is Joy! There is something so utterly captivating in the simple and often times, hidden witness of a single life of faith, imbued with sacrifice, love and self gift, poured out and consumed under the dim lights of everyday life, perhaps lived holier than most lives. There in Joy! In your respective state of life how do you 'realize' God's love and Presence right now in your life? Where is He? Did you discover His will and let go of everything else to cling to that Will of God, that Pearl of Great Price? Wherever our treasure is, there will be our heart. Whatever is the Pearl of Great Price in our life, it will be realized by how we live. Are you wiling to leave the petty distractions, attractions and attachments to the side and pursue Him, and His will with all the intensity, focus and sacrifice of a buried treasure?
Prayer: Suscipe "You have given all to me, now I return it. Give me only your love and your grace, that's enough for me"
