Gospel Matthew 8: 23-27
As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him.
Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea,
so that the boat was being swamped by waves;
but he was asleep.
They came and woke him, saying,
"Lord, save us! We are perishing!"
He said to them, "Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?"
Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea,
and there was great calm.
The men were amazed and said, "What sort of man is this,
whom even the winds and the sea obey?"
Come Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me and console me. Tell me what I ought to do and command me to do it. I promise to be docile to your voice and promptings in my heart. Amen
Let us ponder the Gospel for today: (This Lectio will be a bit different then Sunday as this Lectio is for our Catholicfest Family Retreatants
Gospel points of reflection:
1) "Jesus got into the boat" Infinite enters Finite. (Jesus and the soul)
2.) "Suddenly a violent storm came up" The winds and waves of Desolation come abruptly/fire station pole
3) "swamped by the waves" Waves come; waves of fear, anger, self recrimination, jealousy, doubts etc
4.) "He was asleep" Asleep is not dead, asleep is alive and present yet not in conversation at the moment
5.) "They came and woke him" Be with them-sense their alarm and desperateness, why do we 'awake' another person? Jesus?
6.) "Why are you fearful, o you of little faith" The interesting thing about this sentence, is that it is one sentence spoken by Jesus, is separated by a comma, Jesus is not waiting for the answer to the first part necessarily, He is more drawing the correlation between the two. example, why are you angry, you of little patience. (the remedy is present for the 'ailment')
7) "Then He got up, rebuked the winds and sea and there was a great calm" Jesus alone can put to rest things that we and others helping us find impossible. He is the great Doctor of souls
8) "The men were amazed" why amazed? They didn't know Him, who He is.....
Perhaps the most important question to ask is the singular one asked by Jesus in the Gospel.."WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM? and then..."WHY ARE YOU TERRIFIED?"
9) Are you a ? or a ! (Fr Wilfrid Stinnessen)
Closing Prayer: 4th Stanza of the the Hymn "My Country Tis of Thee
My country tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died!
Land of the Pilgrim's pride!
From every mountain side,
Let freedom ring!
My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love.
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture fills
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song.
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.
Our father's God to, Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King!
