Gospel Mark 8:27-35
Jesus and his disciples set out
for the villages of Caesarea Philippi.
Along the way he asked his disciples,
"Who do people say that I am?"
They said in reply,
"John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others one of the prophets."
And he asked them,
"But who do you say that I am?"
Peter said to him in reply,
"You are the Christ."
Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.
He began to teach them
that the Son of Man must suffer greatly
and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed, and rise after three days.
He spoke this openly.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples,
rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."
He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them,
"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake
and that of the gospel will save it."
“Along the way…” as they were walking with Jesus, our Lord asked them The question. “Who do you say that I am?”
Think back to when you were a child. As a 7 year old; Our Lord asked you then; “Who do you say that I am ?” what might you have answered? Now continue on- as a teenager? As a college student? What do you remember changing in your knowledge of Jesus Christ, “Along the way?” How did Jesus reveal Himself to you? How have you come to know Him? And now in your adult journey with Him? What has changed? What has remained the same in your answer to Him? We, the Church, the Bride of Christ we must know Him. Jesus is asking for a personal response from each one of us. It is The question that holds the answer. Clarity in this answer is not only good, but it is necessary, as we journey with Him and grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Secondly, what can we learn in the manner of our Lord’s revelation of Himself? Right after Peter declares that He is the Christ, what does our Lord share about His ‘identity’? What does He share about ‘Who He Is?"‘ He shares about His Mission- Redemptive Suffering. We cannot be strong to suffer with and for the One we love, if we don’t know the One we love. Knowledge makes love strong.
There has never been a more important time to be clear about this answer than now.
Sit somewhere quietly with Jesus. Be with Him. With all the powers of your baptized soul, endowed with Faith, Hope and Charity, ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you, who He is. Be with Him, yes, this is a place to stay…with Him. Listen to Him with your heart. We must come to know this Person of Jesus Christ in a deep way, because knowing Him changes everything.
Pray to the Holy Spirit: Breathe in me O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me O Holy Spirit, that my work too may be holy. Draw my heart O Holy Spirit that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend all that is holy. Guard me then O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.
