Jesus told his disciples a parable,
"Can a blind person guide a blind person?
Will not both fall into a pit?
No disciple is superior to the teacher;
but when fully trained,
every disciple will be like his teacher.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye,
but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?
How can you say to your brother,
'Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,'
when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first;
then you will see clearly
to remove the splinter in your brother's eye.
"A good tree does not bear rotten fruit,
nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.
For every tree is known by its own fruit.
For people do not pick figs from thornbushes,
nor do they gather grapes from brambles.
A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good,
but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil;
for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks."
+Prayer: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful and kindle in them the fire of Your Love. Amen
“Out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good.” I love this sentence. I love to think that there is a ‘store of goodness’ within our souls, which enables us to ‘produce good.’ What a beautiful reality to ponder. The ‘store’ has all we need, the ‘store’ is free of charge, because if we possess it, if it is within our hearts, it is ours and so we are rich. What is this ‘store of Goodness’ but God Himself- His very life dwelling within us? It is He who does the good works if we allow Him to have a voice in our hearts, if we honor that voice and heed that voice, if we allow His Spirit to lead us, to form us, to teach us. If we choose to make ourselves wholly teachable, docile and humble. If we allow His life to grow within us, which means allowing self and its cravings ‘drop to the side’ then His life will take over within us. We all find this last part hard, even St Paul did when he speaks of it: I do not understand my own actions. “For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. “I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members” (Rom 7). To cooperate with God’s voice and Grace we all need help.
How do we do this? One way may be very simply this; invite Him! Ask Him! Ask Him to draw you deeper into an awareness His presence in your soul that you may draw from this “store of goodness” for many souls.
Let us Pray: Control your Imagination and close your eyes to the things of the senses, and close your ears to noises of the world, in order to enter into your heart. Then in the sanctity of your baptized soul, which is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, speak to that Divine Spirit-The Holy Spirit : O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore you, enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me and console me. Tell me what I should do and command me to do it. I promise to be submissive to all that you desire of me, and accept all that you permit to happen to me, only show me what is Thy Most Holy Will. Amen
